Here is a page where I discuss Pokémon pricing issues.
Product pricing
I have noticed on several of the online auction sites, as well as a number
of internet based vendors, a disturbing trend of charging significantly
higher than the suggested retail prices for the
American Pokémon collectible cards.
Now, for sites which are out of the US, that might be reasonable - they
have to do currency exchanges, special shipping, etc. which may in
some cases mean they have to pay
a lot more for the products than what people in the US have to pay.
But, if you are buying in the US, you should be VERY
careful when you are asked to pay more than the suggested retail prices for
any product, unless there are some extenuating circumstances. Why would
you want to spend
more on the product than necessary? Perhaps there are good reasons from
the consumer's point of view. But at least be sure to research before you
spend as much as FOUR times the current prices for products.
Just because someone _tells_ you an item is rare, don't necessarily
believe them. Ask around. Check, for instance, on the
PokeParents mailing list.
